Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:38
When Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the Holy of Holies (inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle) was torn from top to bottom. What is the significance of this?
When Jesus sacrificed Himself for us, He walked through the Holy of Holies as our High Priest, forever, as promised by God, the Father, in Psalm 110:4 below:
The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Melchizedek was introduced to us as the priest of God Most High and King of Salem. Salem was the former name of Jerusalem and ‘King of Salem’ means king of peace. His name means king of righteousness. Melchizedek met Abraham returning from the retrieval of his nephew, Lot, and slaughter of the kings. He brought bread and wine to Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises from God. The lesser is, always, blessed by the greater. Melchizedek was so great in Abraham’s eyes that Abraham gave him 1/10th of all the spoil. This man, Melchizedek, has no genealogical records; no beginning and no end. Melchizedek is portrayed as a biblical ‘type’ or ‘foreshadow’ of Jesus Christ. God swore to Jesus that He would be a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
The Levitical law came 430 years later commanding that the mortal sons of Levi, who were set aside to become priests for the Lord’s work, collect an apportionment of 1/10 from all their brothers and sisters of the eleven remaining tribes. The tribe of Levi would not own any land, but, simply, reside and be provided for within the tribal communities. The Levitcal priestly laws did not replace the Melchizedek priesthood. It was established as a temporary guardian for God’s people until the appointed time of Jesus Christ, our immortal High Priest. In effect, the Levites paid 1/10 to Melchizedek, as well, through the loins of their ancestor, Abraham.
Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament sacrificial system as the ultimate and perfect sacrificial lamb for mankind. There is, only, One who is perfect and He is Jesus Christ, our Creator and Designer of life eternal. He is God. The Old Testament sacrificial system is now obsolete! The Book of Leviticus teaches us about the laws, ordinances, and duties of the temporary priesthood that God put in place, until the appointed time of His ultimate sacrifice.
Since man dies, the temporary priesthood, constantly, stood on their feet, rotated the priests, and sacrificed countless innocent animals due to endless sin. When Jesus became our High Priest, He ‘sat down’ at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Just before He died, Jesus said “It is finished”. Sin and death are, now, finished through His one time sacrificial death and resurrection. Jesus is the end of the old testament sacrificial system. Jesus conquered sin and death for all of His children. Every past, present, and future sin is forgiven, ONLY, through our Savior and High Priest, Jesus Christ. We are now justified to stand in the presence of Holy God through Jesus Christ. Praise our Lord, forever and ever!
With thankfulness to our Father through His Son, Jesus Christ.
In Jesus’ name,
